Central ocular motor disorders in MS and other diseases:
Diagnosis, treatment and a hands-on course
Thursday, December 3, 2026
09:00–10:30 · 90-minute course
Al Baraha 1
Speaker: M. Strupp (DE)
Chairs: S. Farouk Ahmed (KW), S. Nouri Ibrahim (AE)
1
Objectives and topics of the course
- Understanding the functional anatomy and basic physiology of the ocular motor system: four key nuclei and two pathways in the brainstem, four nuclei in the cerebellum
- Clinical examination of the eight types of eye movements and nystagmus, including a hands-on course
- Precise topographic anatomical diagnosis of central ocular motor disorders:
- Brainstem (medulla, pons, mesencephalon)
- Cerebellum (flocculus, nodulus, fastigial nuclei, vermis)
- Ocular motor cortex
- Pathophysiology and aetiology of ocular motor disorders:
- MS
- Other autoimmune diseases
- Lysosomal and metabolic diseases
- Current treatment of central ocular motor disorders from 4-aminopyridine, acetylleucine, and steroids to plasmapheresis
2
Didactic concept of the 90-minute course
- A systematic approach to an apparently difficult topic
- Case-based with videos showing typical ocular motor findings which allow a precise topographic anatomical diagnosis
- Learning and de-learning
- At the end: a video-quiz with a poll and three champions
3
Aim
The participants should:
- Be able to examine, diagnose and treat
- Change their attitudes to this topic: “Yes, I can!”, “Yes, I can also teach my colleagues!”
“Yes, I can!”
“Yes, I can also teach my colleagues!”
4
Finally, the motto
Clinical examination of eye-movements: A window into the brainstem and cerebellum
