Pre-MENACTRIMS Symposium Paradigms

From Signals to Decisions: Technological, Imaging and Fluid Biomarkers in MS Treatment

Multiple sclerosis care increasingly requires information beyond clinical assessment alone. With growing recognition of subclinical disease activity, smouldering inflammation and progression independent of relapse activity, sensitive and clinically meaningful biomarkers are becoming increasingly important.

The Paradigms pre-MENACTRIMS symposium will explore how technological, imaging and fluid biomarkers can provide complementary insights into disease activity, treatment response and progression. It will examine how digital tools capture real-world function, how advanced imaging reveals inflammatory and neurodegenerative processes, and how fluid biomarkers such as neurofilament light chain can detect biological changes not always apparent clinically.

A central theme will be how these different sources of information can be integrated with clinical judgement and patient characteristics to support more precise and personalised treatment decisions in MS care.

What are the key takeaways from this Symposium?

By the end of the symposium, participants should be able to:

  • Understand how technological, imaging and fluid biomarkers can support more personalised treatment decisions in multiple sclerosis.
  • Identify biomarker signals that may help detect subclinical disease activity, treatment response and risk of progression.
  • Explore how digital and wearable technologies can complement clinic-based assessment by capturing real-world function over time.
  • Recognise the imaging and fluid biomarkers with the greatest potential relevance for monitoring inflammation, neurodegeneration and smouldering disease.
  • Consider the limitations, confounders and standardisation challenges that may affect biomarker interpretation and implementation in clinical practice.
  • Integrate biomarker information with clinical judgement, MRI findings, patient characteristics and treatment goals, while considering applicability across different healthcare settings.
